Aldabra Tortoise

  • Range: Native to the Aldabra Islands in the Indian Ocean. Populations are considered vulnerable by zoologists, though not legally endangered.
  • Habitat: Grasslands and swamps
  • Life Expectancy: At least 100 years, up to 200 years.
  • Weight: Up to 450 pounds
  • Diet: Strictly vegetarian.
  • Behavior: Generally solitary, but gather to feed when food or water are scarce. Our tortoises love to be scratched on the legs and neck. Just like house cats, they will rise up and stretch out to receive the human attention.

At The Zoo

The Zoo currently houses two male aldabra tortoises. They were wild caught and no one knows how old they are. We do know that they came into the country in 1968 and 1971 as adults, which probably places them between 75 and 125 years old.
