Matschie's Tree Kangaroos

  • Habitat: Native only to the rugged mountains of extreme northeast New Guinea.
  • Length: Bodies range from 20 to 30 inches long, tails range between 17 to 36 inches long.
  • Weight: Males weigh approximately 15 pounds; females weigh approximately 17 pounds.
  • Diet: These marsupials eat leaves, flowers, grass, fruits, and nuts.
  • Behavior: They are the only members of the kangaroo family that can climb trees. Matschie’s tree kangaroos can leap up to 60 feet without injury. They are adapted to life in the trees, with broader feet, bigger claws (to grasp bark and branches), plus longer & more flexible tails than ground-dwelling kangaroos. Only about 1,400 survive in the world as their habitat is being destroyed by logging, mining, and agriculture.
  • Location: Found in the Australian Outback in the Tree Kangaroo Exhibit.

At The Zoo

The Zoo currently houses two Matschies tree kangaroos; male Marobe and female Karla.
