Chimpanzee

  • Range: Africa from Guinea to Zaire, Uganda and Tanzania
  • Habitat: Wooded savannahs
  • Description: 3 to 5 ½ feet tall, 110 to 300 pounds
  • Diet: Primarily plant material such as fruits, nuts, leaves, shoots and bark. They will also eat insects, eggs and birds or other small animals.
  • Behavior: Highly intelligent and social. They show rapid mood swings and may become very aggressive. They sleep in trees in nests which are built nightly of twigs and leaves.
  • Chimps are unable to swim and are afraid of water.
  • Location: Found on the East side of Africa near the hippos and rhinos.

At The Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo currently houses 11 chimps. Watch as Cotu, the youngest, grows and mimics her mother, aunts and uncles.
