Slender-Snouted Crocodile

  • Range: These crocs are found in all west African countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Their legal status by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is endangered.
  • Habitat: Primarily a freshwater species, but they are sometimes seen in coastal areas. Crocodiles prefer the quiet waters of slow-flowing rivers, lakes, and ponds.
  • Length: Averages 8 feet in length, but can reach up to 13 feet. Snout is narrower than other crocodiles.
  • Diet: Feed heavily upon fish, although they also eat crabs, shrimp, snakes, frogs and other small mammals and birds. Because of its narrow snout, it is likely that the young also eat insects.
  • Behavior: Usually solitary, very shy and secretive. They live singly or in small parties of up to six individuals. Crocodiles are rarely seen as they inhabit a deep jungle environment and do little basking.

At The Zoo

The Zoo currently houses two male crocodiles. Frank & Jesse frequently hide in their exhibit's planters, so visitors often have to look to find them.

How do you tell crocs apart? We know them by the differences in dark color bands on their tails.
