The Kansas City Zoo is located in Swope Park at 6800 Zoo Drive, Kansas City, Missouri. Just off I-435 and US-71 highway, the Zoo is easily accessible from any part of the metropolitan area.
All potential volunteers must have a volunteer application on file to be considered for the Zoo volunteer programs.
2. Interview Process Interested candidates for positions as Docents will need to complete an interview before being placed into the program. This allows the Volunteer Coordinator to learn as much as possible about the person's interests, experiences, and motivation and to assess the needs and expectations of the Zoo at that time. Specific work assignments can be discussed during the interview. Interviews are usually short and informal. The volunteer coordinator reserves the right to suggest alternative volunteer opportunities that are a better fit.
3. Orientation and Trainings If offered a volunteer position, the applicant must attend a new volunteer orientation prior to their first day of volunteering to review Zoo Policies, Safety and Security Procedures, and job assignment. New volunteers become active only after attending orientation. Some volunteer positions require a background check.Docents and Summer Docents go through specific trainings prior to becoming active volunteers. All other programs use on-the-job training.
