The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium, led by School and Community Engagement Educator, Olivia Yurko, partners with The Bird Endowment and Asociación Armonía to conserve and protect the Blue-throated macaws in Bolivia. Through the Nido Adoptivo program, nest boxes are set up on the protected Laney Rickman Reserve in the Benni Savanna region. The Blue-throated macaws typically nest in large tree cavities, which are becoming more difficult to find due to habitat loss. To date, 145 birds have fledged from the nest boxes, which represents about a third of their wild population! A newly constructed filed station will host the “Discover Blue-throats Education Project”, which will connect the reserve with the local community and inspire the next generation of conservationists. These efforts have already had lasting impacts and will continue to be a powerful tool in protecting these beautiful macaws and their habitat.
