Puerto Rican Amazon Parrot (PRAP) Community Engagement and Conservation Education Initiative

In collaboration with the World Parrot Trust, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is supporting the Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery Program, a multi-agency project with the goal of bringing the Puerto Rican Amazon Parrot back from the brink of extinction.  The project, led by Animal Care Team Lead, Jorge Rivera, aims at enhancing the educational outreach efforts throughout the island by facilitating a variety of learning opportunities. One of the flagship offerings of the program is facilitating school group visits to El Portal Visitor Center at El Yunque National Forest. Here, partners from Amigos de El Yunque lead interpretation programs, where students learn about the parrot, the forest, and the native flora and fauna in a classroom setting, followed by a trail walk in which they get to apply what was learned.

The project also engages a citizen science program aimed at habitat restoration where citizens receive native saplings to plant on their property. This project is a multifaceted effort to aide in the Puerto Rican Parrot population recovery!
